Carlin Wing returns to the Game Lab to discuss her newest book Bounce: A History of Balls, Walls, and Gaming Bodies (2026)Join us for a book talk from the author of Bounce: Balls, Walls, and Bodies in Games and Play! Bounce follows an array of bouncing balls through the histories of non-electronic and electronic games, across the spectrum of play, game, and sport, and into the domains of physics, material science, animation, and computing. From the pings and pongs of virtual tennis to the bounded spectacle of Electronic Arts’ FIFA and ancient Mesoamerican ballgames, this book explores an interaction that is central to thousands of physical and digital games and sports.
Carlin Wing is an Associate Professor in the Intercollegiate Department of Media Studies at Scripps College. She earned her AB in Visual and Environmental Studies and Social Anthropology at Harvard University, her MFA in Photography and Media at CalArts, and her PhD in Media, Culture, and Communication at NYU. Her areas of interest include media and communication; science and technology; material culture; globalization; performance; disability; and play, games, and sport. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, and has published writing in Games and Culture, Public Books, Cabinet, Art Lies, and The Bulletin of the Serving Library.
