I acquired and restored this Cold-War era game from Kyrgyzstan; it’s a video game version of Ulak-Tartysh, a game like polo, but played with a headless goat carcass instead of a ball.
I started out trying to import a Polski Fiat from Poland, and somehow ended up with this: an old, beaten Ulak-Tartysh video game.

Ulak-Tartysh, for those of you not familiar with carcass-based sports, is essentially polo played with the headless body of a dead goat. It’s popular in Central Asia, and especially in Kyrgyzstan, which is where this fascinating game hails from. This one appears to have been built in 1983, at some state-run electronics factory in the city of Mailuu-Suu. The coin slots say “15 Kopeks,” but I think at that time all the USSR satellite states used that denomination.

I got it here as a strange sort of compensation when a warehouse owner in Poland was unable to ship the Fiat like we had agreed; apparently, this machine was just sitting, forgotten, in a corner of the warehouse. To restore it, I cleaned up the case, and replaced the power supply system with a cobbled-together 110V unit, from the 220V it originally had. I’ve made repairs, and had to replace the screen/CRT, but beyond that it’s as I got it. I left the case in its battered state, but the marquee cleaned up surprisingly well.

Westcoast is a panorama-video-collage consisting of interwoven scenes mounted on a coastline somewhere between Rotterdam and Sydney. After a dark spiritual waterway recalling medieval atmospheres, the panorama ends in a cave encompassing a refuse Jacuzzi in which a woman gazes about with melancholy.

Vinyl Williams is a group of musicians, interactive designers, collage artists, improvisational vacuums, exot- ic windows into hypnogogic resonances, space cruising deities, turquoise-pop reactionaries, dream world explanations of the inexplicable, phantasms diving within bravery, repetition and noise, ancient Egyptian architecture (frozen music), new age revitalization of self-mirrorization, telepathy, and extended moments.

Now you get to play the newest kind of soldier: one who remotely drops bombs on foreign soil during the day, and at night goes home to his family in the suburbs. In Unmanned, the conflict is internal — the only blood you’ll shed is from shaving cuts. But is there collateral damage in this new way of waging war?

Originally created for a group show under the provocation “Composite”, Uncomposed (after Titian after Giorgione) deconstructs Giorgione’s Sleeping Venus, itself a composite, the landscape and sky being completed by Titian following Giorgione’s death in 1510. The work was a landmark of its era, reflecting a new shift in modern art with the inclusion of a female nude at its center. Employing three-dimensional computer graphics and elements of Giorgione’s original masterpiece, Roxby Smith replaces his stylized Renaissance figure with a fantasized digital body transplanted into an augmented hyper-real landscape.

The video is an allegory of a person’s life as a videogame avatar, travelling the paths traced by a consumer society and survival instincts. What’s playful turns into a melodrama, strengths become weaknesses, and everything is magnified by the stigma of individuality.

His research interests and performance activities include hip-hop and electronic dance music, video games and generative media, and sound studies. From Boston to Los Angeles, he has performed as a DJ, drummer, and electronic musician for various experimental music acts, and is one of the co-founders of the chiptune music duo, The Attic Bits.

The 1K Project II is created by artist Guillaume Klein (a.k.a “BlackShark”) using the physics based driving game Track Mania. 1000 replays were recorded, then played back merged together using the replay editor. The result is a polished video of flocking swarming cars.

Space Maestro is an interactive Kinect experience that enables players to create their own musical universe through free-form movement in physical space. By spatially moving both hands like a maestro conducting an orchestra, players fuse gas clouds in space into stars.

As new stars are born, collide, and die, they trigger musical stingers that compose a unique audio-visual experience.

This video is a recreation of one of the most popular scenes in the movie Forrest Gump. Using SecondLife and its extensive library of tools for character creation, we attempted to recreate both actors. Each scene was taken and recorded as closely as possible to original film. Audio from the original film was overlaid after the scenes were completed.

Taken as a whole, Right Here, Out There (Nowhere) can be seen as
a rich tapestry of suggestive images, which references both cinema mythologies (cinema being the repository of American mythologies) and historical panorama painting—one of the precursors to the cinematic experience. The artists artificially imposed a fixed camera perspective onto the material, which scans across the surface in a continual horizontal tracking shot, which tends to suggest an alien or robotic surveillance. For Hironaka & Suib, that contrast -between the artificiality of the material and the camera’s incessant search- is essential to uncovering the mechanisms at work in fantasy genres.

This game is about the stereotype that women do not have body hair. It touches on the extremes that women go through to remove body hair in order to feel accepted by society. The game is designed to make people feel awkward and uncomfortable with the removal of hair; it’s also supposed to show the copious amount of pain and money that women go through to remove their hair either permanently or temporarily. Real Women Have Hair is a polemical game arguing that it is natural for women to have body hair and it is unfair that they are pressured to go through these painful and expensive extremes to remove it and hide it!

ATUM transforms the player into a mechanic in 
a world reminiscent of sci-fi classics like Blade Runner and the stories of Philip K. Dick. The game takes a novel approach to familiar point-and-click gameplay and combines it with platformer puzzles. ATUM toys with the concept of multi-layer gameplay, allowing players to explore mathematical loops and philosophical recurrences.

BaraBariBall is a competitive sports game for two or four players. Score by dunking the ball in the water on the opposing team’s side, lose a point for falling into the water yourself.

A recreation of the experience of being involved in the world of graffiti.
There are 4 groups of people: Graf, Paint, Pig, Pedestrian. Graffers want fame from throwing up bombs.

For them, more fame is awarded to those using bolder more obvious locations because they’re better seen by the Pedestrians. Pedestrians are wannabes who walk around texting about the tags they see. At the end of the round the pedestrian with the most points becomes a Graffer. Pigs are just bustas and want to give people a hard time and flex their authoritative might. Round 
is over after 10 minutes and the game can be played as long as desired.

Save State is a cerebral, mobile game which is extremely critical of human rights violations produced by Apple and Foxconn. Upon initial release, the game was censored from Apple’s mobile application store. This narrative chronicles the afterlives of seven overworked laborers who committed suicide while building the world’s mobile devices. Those who assemble the dreams of this world now have their own at a devastating cost.

COLOR[FUL]_COLOR[ADO]_3D is a [re]mix/ [re]imagining/continuation of Phil Morton’s Colorful Colorado (1976). Created as a part of the IRL ++ online event REMIX-IT-RIGHT: REDISCOVERIES IN THE PHIL MORTON ARCHIVE, this piece looks to transport Morton’s cyberpsychedelic masterpiece into a digital & virtual three-dimensional environment – staying true to Morton’s ethic of copy-it- right: openness, sharing, remixing, remaking, distributing, etc.

Kentucky Route Zero is a magical realist adventure game about a secret highway in the caves beneath Kentucky, and the mysterious folks who travel it. Gameplay is inspired by point-and-click adventure games, but focused on characterization, atmosphere and storytelling rather than clever puzzles or challenges of skill.

Corporate America is a political satire board game about corporate influence over government in the United States. The game simulates our current society, but the simulation is light, more like a political cartoon than a text book. And the humor is both pervasive and uncompromising.

In Corporate America, players take on the roles of corporations striving to maximize their profits by any means necessary. At the end of the game, whoever has the most money wins. In Corporate America, that’s just business as usual.

What looks first like a simple wooden piece of furniture is actually filled with lasers, motors and electronics. Press any of the two side buttons and the cabinet starts to buzz, displaying some old-fashioned game through its surface in a surprising fashion. Laser Cabinet was made as an exercise in rapid prototyping. It uses a laser, two mirrors mounted on stepper motors and an Arduino as microcontroller.

Mimicry is a playful installation displaying a series of computer graphics portraits slotted in antique looking wooden frames. As someone approaches the screen, a character comes to life and mimics the viewer’s expressions. In front of the second image, the player finds herself in the position of a romantic figure surronded by a fantastic landscape which she manipulates the natural elements at will. The project demonstrates how real-time motion capture technology, interaction design, and motion graphics can be combined to evoke human expressiveness in digital avatars, bringing computer-mediated communication closer to real life.

A story with pirates, sloths and sex told com- pletely in text graphics. A blocky and brutal visual aesthetic synchronized with explosives, drunken funk and computer screams. All made in 44 kilobytes, to be executed by a Commodore 64 and its colourful ASCII-alternative called PETSCII.

The media presents our world in terms of “good vs. evil,” “us vs them,” or “good guys vs bad guys.” Soldiers on either side of a conflict are either exalted as heroes or vilified as “the enemy,” depending on how the audience is meant to perceive the political situation. Video games echo these harsh divisions in the way they differentiate between teams, allowing players to make split-second decisions about who they should be shooting.

When the uniforms and identifying features of combatants are stripped away, however, lines of division fall away, and determining the alignment of each combatant becomes impossible; the soldiers are reduced to weapons, wielded against one another.

Exit Palette is a puzzle-platform game based on RYB subtractive color theory. Player guides the test subject, Mr. White, through various simulation chambers to mix colors and understand how these mysterious color cubes react to each other.

Mr. White has in his possession a highly experimental device, the Palette Suitcase. The Suitcase is capable of producing three types of cubes; red, yellow and blue. The primary colors.

Folds may be understood as a rapprochement with the history of the Lindenau Museum’s collection of plaster casts.

_grau is a personal reflection on memories coming up during a car accident, where past events emerge, fuse, erode and finally vanish ethereally.

Chiral collects cinematic etudes, which develop various conceptual approaches in order to expand the two-dimensional image into space. The installation is completed by a soundtrack by Austrian composer Richard Eigner.

Objectif was created to facilitate discussion about our perceptions of attractiveness. Each portrait is hand drawn and painted to represent a black woman. Upon playing a few rounds, players will notice duplicate face templates wherein only the “coloring” has been changed. The inclusion of these duplicates allows players to realize the shallow nature of race or color.


As an art piece, Objectif challenges our perceptions of race, women and beauty while simultaneously revealing the assumptions we make about ourselves and others.

OKO is an original graphic puzzle game for tablet devices. Faced with a moving collage, the player manipulates a series of rotating circular sections to reconstruct satellite images. For each level, the animated pieces multiply with increasingly complex pat- terns. Like solving a moving jigsaw puzzle, the challenge is to keep your eye on the details. OKO is a mesmerising and immersive experience navigating in images from the NASA database. Application developed with openFrameworks, available for iOS and Android tablets.

The communist state of Arstotzka has ended a 6-year war with neighboring Kolechia and reclaimed its rightful half of the border town, Grestin. Your job as immigration inspector is to control the flow of people entering the Arstotzkan side of Grestin from Kolechia. Among the throngs of immigrants and visitors looking for work are hidden smugglers, spies, and terrorists. Using only the documents provided by travelers and the Ministry of Admission’s primitive inspect, search, and fingerprint systems, you must decide who can enter Arstotzka and who will be turned away or arrested.

Inspired by questionnaires or “psychological tests” we know from women’s magazines, the game asks the question: How perfect are you? Over the course of seven different age-stages you take decisions how your life is going to be. But be careful with your choices: Having a perfect youth can make it very difficult to be a perfect grandmother when you’re 80!

Two combatants meet in the middle of
a field, poles in hand. The objective? To knock a ball suspended above their heads into the opponent’s castle. The actual pole vaulting itself is harder than it looks, and coupled with the game’s physics, makes for a game that is rewarding for skilled players, but also allows for some fun con- trolled chaos for novice players.
