Game mechanics are radically transforming how people interact with each other and the world around them. Companies like Zynga, Svcngr, Foursquare, Nike, Kmart, and international governments are all using game mechanics to drive user engagement towards specific goals. In this talk I’ll look at a few examples of some systems designed to effect attitudinal & behavior change, and local consumption habits. We’ll specifically look at games that integrate demographic, sensor, video, geolocation, and governmental data.

Bio Kati London designs, develops and builds opportunities for interacting with others — whether that be for people and plants, residents of Gaza City and Tel-Aviv, or gamers playing tag with tiger sharks in the Great Barrier Reef. Her work has been featured in the Design Museum of London, the Museum of Science & Industry, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, among others. She frequently speaks on digital/physical hybridization and real world games. Her work has been profiled in the New York Times, National Geographic, Businessweek, Fast Company, Der Spiegel, the BBC, Wired, and more.
Kati is currently the Vice President and Senior Producer at Area/Code, where she works with clients that include: the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, Foursquare, the United Kingdom’s Department for Transport, the BBC, Channel 4, the Carnegie Institute/Girls Math and Science Project, Disney Imagineering, Nike, Discovery Channel, CBS, MTV, and the Peter G. Peterson Foundation. In 2010, London was named by MIT’s Technology Review Magazine as a Top 35 Innovator Under 35.
